JSE Commodity Derivatives Market
The agricultural derivatives market of the JSE Limited enables transparent price discovery and effective risk management for grain markets across South and Southern Africa. By bringing buyers and sellers together on a regulated exchange, all trades are secured through a central clearing system. Futures contracts lock in prices for a set future date, with both parties to honour the agreement. Options provide flexibility – allowing buyers to secure a minimum (Put) or maximum (Call) price for a premium – while sellers take the opposite position if exercised. Buyers are not obligated to exercise. A wide range of local and international agricultural commodities are available for trading.
The South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS), a non-profit company, was established on 11 November 1997 following the deregulation of South Africa’s marketing and control boards to provide essential market information to the grain and oilseeds industry. SAGIS serves four industries: maize (white and yellow), oilseeds (sunflower, soybean, canola and groundnuts), winter cereals (wheat, barley and oats), and sorghum. Before deregulation, this information was managed by control boards, but the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act ended single-channel marketing, prompting industry role-players to establish SAGIS to support a free market. Its core function is to collect, process, analyse and distribute reliable, timely agronomic information. SAGIS also performs additional roles, including monitoring import tariffs and issuing audit certificates for minimum market access.
Global Currency Conversions (Xe.com)
Xe is a global platform that specialises in currency exchange rates and conversions. It provides real-time and historical exchange rate data, allowing individuals and businesses to quickly convert one currency into another and track global currency movements. Xe is widely used for accurate, up-to-date conversions across a broad range of international currencies.
